Fashion Photoshoot Cost Calculator: Shoot vs AI, Per Approved Image
Enter your own shoot, self-serve AI tool and managed AI quote numbers to see cost per approved image and per approved SKU, with first-pass acceptance, rejects and review time in the maths.
By Surajnarayanan SUpdated

At a glance
- Result per route: total cost, cost per approved image, cost per approved SKU and hours of team review.
- Break-even acceptance: the first-pass rate a DIY AI tool needs to match your managed quote.
- Runs in your browser. Inputs start blank, and the share link keeps your numbers in the URL only.
8M Studio is a managed production studio, not a self-serve AI tool. This calculator is useful even if you never work with us.
Direct answer
This calculator compares a traditional photoshoot, a self-serve AI tool and a managed AI production quote on the cost of each approved, uploadable image. You enter your own rates. It adds what per-image prices leave out: rejected generations, reshoots, retouching and your team's review time. Every formula is shown, and nothing is pre-filled.
Best for
- +Ecommerce and catalogue leads comparing a shoot quote with AI options for the same SKUs
- +Teams already using a self-serve AI tool who want to price review time honestly
- +Buyers sanity-checking a managed AI production quote
Not designed for
- -A rate card or a quote for 8M Studio services
- -Benchmarks: the calculator has no default or typical rates
- -Campaign or editorial one-offs priced by creative concept rather than by image

Calculate cost per approved image
Fill in the job first: how many SKUs and how many approved images each SKU needs. Then complete any route you want to compare, using your own quotes and billing pages. Results update as you type. A route stays blank until its required inputs are in, and optional fields left empty count as zero.

Your numbers appear in each formula once a route is complete.
Inputs start blank and nothing here is an example price or a typical rate. Calculations run in your browser.
Don't know your first-pass acceptance? The first-pass acceptance rate guide shows how to measure it on your hardest SKUs. For what drives shoot and AI prices in the first place, see our fashion product photography pricing guide.
The formulas behind each route
Every route is priced on the same basis: total spend divided by the images that pass your review and go live. N is the number of approved images you need, which is SKUs times approved images per SKU. Minutes convert to money at the hourly rate you enter, divided by 60.
Traditional shoot
- Shoot days D = ceil(N ÷ p), where p is approved images per shoot day
- Reshoot = sₜ × N × (C ÷ p + Rₜ), where C is the day rate, Rₜ the retouch per image and sₜ the reshoot share
- Review = N × (1 + sₜ) × r × w ÷ 60, where r is review minutes per image and w the reviewer's hourly cost
- Total = D × C + Fₜ + N × Rₜ + Reshoot + Review + N × u, where Fₜ is fixed costs and u is upload handling per image
Self-serve AI tool
- Generations G = N ÷ a, where a is first-pass acceptance
- Review = (G × r + (G − N) × d) × w ÷ 60, where d is the minutes it takes to discard a rejected generation
- Total = F + I + G × c + G × (o ÷ 60) × wₒ + Review + N × (R + u), where c is cost per generation, o operator minutes per generation and R retouch per approved image
Managed AI quote
- Images delivered for review M = N ÷ aₘ, where aₘ is the share you expect to accept on review
- Review = (M × r + (M − N) × d) × w ÷ 60
- Rework = 0 if reworks are included, otherwise (M − N) × q_r
- Total = N × q + F + I + Rework + Review + N × u, where q is the quoted price per approved image (a per-SKU quote is divided by images per SKU)
Per image, per SKU and break-even
- Cost per approved image = Total ÷ N. Cost per approved SKU = Total ÷ SKUs.
- Break-even DIY acceptance a* = N × K ÷ (Tₘ − F − I − N × (R + u) + N × d × w ÷ 60), where K = c + o × wₒ ÷ 60 + (r + d) × w ÷ 60 and Tₘ is the managed total. If the result is above 100%, or the bottom of the fraction is zero or less, DIY can't match the quote on those inputs.
How to read your result
Compare the cost per approved image first, then the review hours, because review time is your team's capacity as well as money. The route with the lowest cost per approved image is labelled lowest on your inputs. That label describes your numbers only; change one quote and it can move.
- Break-even acceptance shows how good a DIY tool has to be on your products. If your measured first-pass rate is below it, the managed quote costs less on these inputs.
- If review time dominates your DIY result, read AI fashion tools vs managed production.
- The DIY and managed routes differ in more than price; see managed AI product photography vs self-serve generators.
- We break down where shoot budgets go, line by line, in fashion shoot cost vs AI production.
"Compare cost per approved uploaded image against a traditional photoshoot for the same SKUs. Managed AI catalogue should come in clearly cheaper than that shoot — that's the frame, not tool credits or day rates on their own."
Where to find the numbers to enter
Use figures you can point to: a written shoot quote, the billing page of the AI tool you use, a managed vendor's quote and a week of your own review log. Avoid vendor-quoted acceptance rates unless you've seen them on your own products. A guess in one field moves every result after it.
- Shoot: ask for the day rate including crew, model and studio, the retouch price per image, and fixed costs such as sample shipping, casting and travel. Getting quotes to compare? Use our guide to choosing a product photography service.
- Self-serve AI tool: the price per generation on your plan, plus the time an operator spends preparing inputs and running each generation.
- Managed AI quote: the price per approved image or per SKU, any setup fee, and whether reworks are included in the price.
- Review time: time a sample of decisions from your own review queue. The AI fashion imagery QC checklist sets out what a reviewer should check.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare a photoshoot with AI-generated images fairly?
Compare the cost of each image you'd actually upload, not the day rate or the price per generation. A shoot's cost includes retouching and reshoots; an AI route's includes rejected generations and review time. This calculator puts all three routes on that one basis.
What is cost per approved image?
Everything you spend to get one image that passes your review and goes live, divided by the number of approved images. It includes rejects, reshoots, retouching and review time, so it's usually higher than a headline per-image price.
What is first-pass acceptance and why does it matter?
The share of images you accept on first review without changes. In a self-serve AI tool, a lower rate means more generations and more review time per approved image. Enter your own numbers to see whether review time or generation spend is the bigger cost for you.
I don't know my acceptance rate. What should I enter?
Count your last batch: how many images you accepted as-is, could fix, and rejected. The count panel in the calculator turns those numbers into percentages. Don't use a vendor's quoted rate unless you've seen it on your own products.
Why are there no default prices?
Shoot day rates, AI generation prices and managed quotes vary widely by market, category and scope, and any default would steer the answer. Enter your own quotes; the formulas are shown so you can check every step.
What does break-even acceptance mean?
The first-pass acceptance a DIY AI tool would need to cost the same per approved image as your managed quote, on your inputs. If your real rate is below it, the managed quote costs less on these numbers.
What costs does the calculator leave out?
Things that are hard to price per image: launch delays, brand consistency across seasons, model or likeness rights, and the cost of a listing rejected by a marketplace. Add any you can price as fixed costs.
Is my data saved?
No. Calculations run in your browser and the calculator doesn't send your numbers anywhere. The share link stores them after the # in the URL, which browsers don't send to the server.
